Description
Weight stigma is widespread throughout our society and may result in people experiencing blaming, teasing, bullying, and discrimination. People with higher weights likely experience judgment about their size, which may also occur in post-acute and long-term facilities. While there are many factors that impact obesity, trauma is prevalent. This session will explore the impact of trauma on larger bodied individuals and how trauma-informed care principles can help mitigate stigma. We’ll also explore Nonviolent Communication skills to transform judgments about larger bodied people and support connections between staff and residents.

Learner Objectives:
  1. Explain the impact of trauma as one factor that may contribute to obesity.
  2. Describe weight stigma and give two examples that occur in long term care settings.
  3. Discuss how trauma-informed care principles can mitigate the impact of factors that may contribute to weight stigma.
  4. Engage in a process based on Nonviolent Communication to transform judgments you may have or may have heard about people with larger bodies.

Nurse Learner Outcome: At the conclusion of this session, participants will self-report a knowledge gain of the factors related to weight stigma and how trauma-informed principles can help mitigate the impact of those factors.
