Correct coding of the MDS document is only the beginning. This education session will take nurses, and the rest of the interdisciplinary team, beyond the basics. MDS nurses will refine their skills and learn strategies to effectively manage all aspects of the MDS Department with a special focus on: Medicare A skilling criteria and PDPM accuracy, Managed Care and Medicaid Reimbursement, Quality Measure management, Quality Reporting Program (QRP), the 5 Star rating, IDT collaboration, and managing audits and appeals.

Learner Objectives:

  1. Review Medicare A skilling criteria.
  2. Discuss the components of the PDPM payment system and necessary documentation to validate scoring.
  3. Discuss coordination of the managed care process.
  4. Examine the CMS Quality Measure definitions and how these measures tie into the 5-Star rating and QRP programs.
  5. Identify strategies to effectively coordinate managed care and other audits and appeals.

Nurse Learner Outcome: At the conclusion of this session, participants will verbalize understanding of the programs affected by the Minimum Data Set (MDS), and how they can effectively manage these programs in order to ensure accuracy of clinical care, reimbursement, and optimization of survey/audit outcomes.
