I have worked in long term care for the entirety of my nursing career. I have been a floor nurse, unit manager, ADON, staff development nurse, facility infection preventionist and DON. I was introduced to infection prevention and control when the ADON position needed to be filled at a facility and I decided to take on the role, not realizing my tasks included doing infection control. It took me a minute to embrace the daunting task that is overseeing the IC program at the facility, but as I embraced it, I found that I loved it and then spent the years following learning all I could to keep the residents and staff healthy. Infection control can be scary when there is a lack of understanding of the program, so I have spent the last 3 1/2 years of my nursing career supporting and educating new IC nurses and facility staff on all things related to infection prevention and control.
