The Michigan Supreme Court Strikes Back: What the Return of the Earned Sick Time Act and Revenge of Minimum Wage Laws Mean for Long-Term Care

On July 31, 2024 the Michigan Supreme Court declared the legislatures strategy to adopt and amend the citizen petitioned for Earned Sick Time Act and minimum wage initiatives unconstitutional setting up a substantial change in Michigan’s paid leave and minimum wage laws in early 2025. This presentation will provide an overview on the changes involved as well as an update on legislative efforts to amend these laws before the Supreme Court’s decision can take effect.

 

Wages in an Hour:  A Class on Avoiding Class Actions

The long term care industry has become a recent target of out of state law firms specializing in class action litigation.  This presentation will cover wage and hour practices to put yourself in the best position to successfully defend, if not totally avoid, any such action coming your way by discussing common errors and updates in the wage and hour requirements, including the latest on overtime exemption rules.

Never before has the National Labor Relations Act (i.e. the law protecting the formation of unions and collective bargaining) had a greater impact on employer’s whose employees are not represented by any labor organization. This presentation will discuss several recent NLRB decisions and their impact on union and non-union workplaces alike.
